Australian Spybeys / Spibys

The earliest record of the name in Australia is Travice Spiby who married Hannah Spiby (neé Leison) who lived in the colony of New South Wales in 1796. Their marriage was recorded at that time at St. Phillips Church of England in 1796. This is only 8 years after the landing of the "First Fleet" (1788) which saw the establishment of the first European settlement in Australia. Sydney at the time was basically a British penal colony with about as many convicts as free people. This places the Spibys among the very first pioneers of modern Australia.

There maybe a British connection. 'Travas' is a very unusual name and is only identifiable with three people in early UK records. A certain 'Travas Spiby' was born in Nottingham around 1752. 'Travas' Spiby had a wife called Mary and they had two children - Hannah (born 1778) and Ann (born 1780). There are many records of their marriage taking place though some confusion in the accuracy of their names. 'A Treverse Spiby' (born about 1753) married Mary Goodwin in 1778 or 1779. A same 'Treverse Spiby' married Mary Lawson also in 1778 or 1779. 'Treverse' is recorded with the name 'Thomas' in certain records also.

A second 'Travess' was married in 1754 in Kegworth, Leicestershire (10 miles from Nottingham). He married Anne Burton. They had 5 children, all in Kegworth, one of whom was also called 'Travess' - christened in 1759. Father 'Travess' and the children are recorded with a variety of spellings to the surname - Spyboy, Spybey and Spybie.

Whether there is any connection between the Nottingham or Kegworth 'Travas'/'Treverse'/'Travess' and the Australian 'Travice' is not known.
